Polachirackal Kocheeppan Tharakan |
| Born in 1861,he is famous as a historian,journalist,dramatist
and novelist.He is the nephew of sri.Kandathil Vrghese Mappila, the
founder of the Malayala Manorama.It is he who wrote the first original
malayalam drama- Mariyamma.He is one among the founder constituter
of the Bhashaposhini Sabha which later became a literary magazine
.He also penned so many essays related to a number of subjects.He
died in 1940 at the age of 70. |
| Famous as KERALA PANINI , A.R was bourn on feb
20,1863. He is the first grammarian of Malayalam and one of the best
critics.He was instrumental in bringing about drastic changes in the
educational scenario by revising the syllabus and reforming the KUDIPPALLIKKOODAM
style.He himself prepared text books to overcome the shortage .He
was a reputed professor.His close deciples includes SAHITYA PANCHANAN
P.K.NARAYANA PILLAIand SWADESABHIMANI K. RAMAKRISHNA PILLAI . |
| AR IS the first ever Indian
principal of The Maharajas college( now University college ) at Thiruvananthapuram.He
is the man who visualised a university uniquely for Kerala.Rajaraja
varma actively lead the reformist group in the PRASAVADHA-which revitalised
the craft and soul of Malayalam poetry.MALAYAVILASAM written by AR
is an absolute example of his talent as a poet.By writting several
introduction to renowned poetical works,he proved himself as thwe
pioneer of the modern critical approch in malayalam literature. |
| Saradamandiram is a house built by AR near Sree
Krishna swamy temple at Mavelikara.He spent his latter part of life
there.On 1918 june 18, one of the greatest lovers of Kerala passed
away.Kerala government acquired Saradamandiram and preserves it as
a memorial. |
| Born on September 21 ,1882 at the Panikkaru veettil
in puthiyakavu.Formerly known as P.T.Varghese ,he joined the M.D.
Seminary at Kottayam. On 1899 january 18, he was converted into a
brother by Pulikkottil Mar Divannasiose. In 1908 he became a priest
.He also became the first priest with M.A.degree.He visited the Ramakrishna
Ashram at Serampur.and understood the essence of Ramayana and Bagawad
Gita. He was attracted by the Indian tradition of the Sanyasis. In
1920,he accepted sanyas .He was the anchor man in reforming the Christian
priesthood by using the scepter and the Holy cross made of wood .In
1925 he became The Bishop .He founded the Bethany movement .He gave
due role to women in the movement. He died on July 15,1953. |

Padinjarethalakkal Jacob Kurian |
| Born in March 12,1884 to the famous Padinjarethalackal
family , Jacob Kurien did his matriculation at the M.D.Seminary High
School in Kottayam.He is the youngest ever member of the Sree Moolam
Assembly.Jacob Kurien's oratory skill was admired by thosands. The
Maharaja of Travancore visited Assembly hall to hear Jacob Kurien
.This was his one and only visit to the 'Sabha'.Jacob Kurien was also
the founder member of Kerala Chrystava Samithy.He also sow the seed
for 'Paura samathva vaadam' of Travancore.He did on 1950 June 26. |
C M Stephen , a multifarious personality , occupies
a prominent position in Indian politics and parliamentary affairs.A
trade union leader , journalist , parliamentarian , union minister
, A I C C general secretary , opposition leader of Loksabha- C M Stephen
has proved his mark in all these fields.
Stephen , was born on December 23 , 1918 to Eapen Mathai and Esther
of Chembakassery house in Cherukole.Known as Thakachan , he was active
in Balajanasaghyam f right from school days. This helped him develop
leader ship quality, oratory and organizing skill. In a function attended
by T M Varghese , Stephen made a speech which turned to be a turning
point in his life.P C Koruthu of Malayalamanorama wrote an article
on Stephen ' Bala vagmi'( The child orator ), thus introducing him
to the readers .After completing B L , Stephen , started his career
as a jounalist in a monthly of News Book Company and then in Financial
News .Gradually he became the owner of 'Pouraprabha' an evening daily.Through
this daily he supported the Congress government , attacking the rule
of C P Ramaswamy Iyyer.In 1949 , he gave up his career as a journalist
and started practising law. In 1951, he joined active politics and
in the same year became the D C C president of Kollam.Kollam congress
bhavan is a result of his hard work.He was totally against mixing
politics with religion.
C M Stephen was also the founder of I N T U C .In 1960 , 65 and
71 he won elections.He played an important role in strengthening
the Congress party in Kerala.In 1978 January 2 , Congress split
into two.C M Stephen joined Indira Congress.It was during this time
that he became the leader of opposition in the Loksabha- the second
malayalee to be so after
A K G. In 1980 ,when Indira gandhi came back to power Stephen became
the cabinet minister in Information and broadcasting.Later he moved
to Postal and Telegraph department.He became A I C C General secretary
in 1982.In 1984 January 16th he passed away. Rajiv Gandhi visited
Mavelikara to pay homage to the departed leader.

| ' Trust based on good ' forms the attraction
of Parappurath's works. In all his literary works , we find one who
holds on to one's culture and Dharma ; at the same time all his female
characters are there who are full of humanity, full of kindness.
In 1924, November 14 , K E Mathai alias Parappurathu was born
to Kunjunaina Easo and Soshamma at Kunnam,Mavelikara.After the death
of his father , the responsibility of looking after the family fell
on the young shoulders of Parappurathu.In 1944 October, he joined
the army as Havildar clerk. His first story was ' Prakasa dhara'.
It was at the military camp at Meerut that he came across Kovilan.This
meeting helped him a lot in his literary career , that based on
the family relations , of the soldiers, their success and failures.
In 1962 China attacked India. This had a shocking effect on Parappurathu.He
was taken aback by the horror of the war , the fear , the ters of
the families of the soldiers. This gave rise to stories like ' Bhayam
' ( fear).
His first novel Ninamaninja Kalpadukal was made into film by Sobhana
Parameswaran and N N Pisharady.He also played the role of chairperson
of a school function in Anveshichu Kandethiyilla and as Sheela's
uncle in Aranazhikaneram.
In 1966 his Nalal Nalvazhi , an anthology of short stories got
the Kerala Sahitya Academy award. He also got the Kerala state award
for the best film in 1971 and 1973. In 1981, December 30th he passed
away. |

Chithramezhuthu K M Varghese |
| K M Varghese was born on 1889 April 22 at Thazhakara.He made a mark in artistic, cultural and literary fields by his sheer dedication , intelligence and skill. Adept in portrait painting , he has to his credit 118 paintings including that of Kerala Varma Valiyakoyi Thampuran , Kochi Maharaja , Sree Narayana Guru etc. When Gandhiji visited Changanacherry , he happened to see Varghese's portrait of Sree Narayana Guru and was fascinated by it.K M Varghese was the innovator of prose poems in Kerala.In 1957 he became a part of the governing body of Kerala Fine Arts Society.He died on July 21st 1962. |

He is the founder of the new Bhakthimargam called
Aathmabodhodhayam.
Irrespective of cast and creed he preeched that 'moksha' can be attained
by anyone who prays to God wholeheartedly.On April 28,1882 Pappankutty
(Guru formely known) born to a sambava couple Ittyathy and Kochuneely
at Budhanoor.After 25 years of intense prayers 'Subhanandha' was born
to them.After several years of wandering Guru returned to Chennithala
and established an Ashram in 1918.Athmabodhodhayasangam was established
the next year itself.Guru met Gandhiji on 1934 January 19 when the
latter visited Mavelikara.On July 29,1950 he left for his Holy Abode
at 'Kottarkavu Ashramam'.

| One of the great reformist leadres of modern
Kerala , T.K.Madhavan was born on 1886 at Kannamangalam.He learned
Sanskrit from Earezha Kochukunju Assan and English from P.Subhramanya
pillai.Right from his school days Madhavan was against untouchability
and inequality.In 1904 he made his maiden speech at the Sree Moolam
Assembly inlieu of his uncle Komalezhathu Kunju pillai chevakar. In
1917 he took over Desabhimani daily.Madhavan became a member of Sree
Moolam Assembly in 1919.In all his speeches he pressed the demand
for Temple entry proclamation.He met Gandhiji at Thirunelveli and
divulged the matter.This made Mahatma accept Temple entry demand and
included it as an agenda of the congress.He lead the Vaikkom Sathyagraha
along with K.P.Kesava Menon. T.K.Madhavan was the first non-christian
who addressed Maramon convention. In 1927 he was made organizing secretary
of the SNDP Yogam.He died at his residence in 1930.A monument was
raised in his honour at Chettikulangara.In 1964 T.K.Madhavan memmorial
college was founded at Nangiarkulangara. |
